[Company Presentations] PWC: Self-Made Billionaires and Their Lessons for Business

PWC: Self-Made Billionaires and Their Lessons for Business

Date: Wednesday September 18, 2013

Time: 3:00 – 3:45 PM EST

Location: Aldrich Hall – Room 209

At PwC, we spend a lot of time speaking to leaders of organizations of all sizes, industries, and geographic footprints. When asked about the most concerning challenges they face, leaders voice worry that they do not have the talent necessary to generate and execute the big ideas necessary to create value and stay ahead of the competition. Where is this large and growing talent gap coming from? After an intensive study of the world’s greatest value creators – self-made billionaires – we believe it’s clear. The problem is self-inflicted. Corporations are hiring, training, and promoting world-class performers. But what is needed now are more producers: people who can envision something new, bring together the people and the resources to create it, and sell it to customers who didn’t know they needed it.

This first systematic study, focusing on 100 of the world’s more than 960 self-made billionaires, reveals distinctive ways that these massive value creators – producers – think and act. We found that self-made billionaires demonstrate habits of mind that are recognizable and replicable (with effort). We’ll discuss the habits of mind of the producer/performer dynamic, practical imagination, inventive execution, risk management, and balancing patience and urgency. Managers and executives can learn from our examples to change their approach to selecting and managing talent to catalyze value creation, blazing a trail with accelerating returns.
