Everybody Codes workshop v2.0 – September 8th

August 16, 2011  |  No Comments  |  by deeksha  |  Events

Everybody Codes

Sometimes by necessity and other times by personality, many great startups have a culture of “I can help with that.” Designers will write Ruby and use vim. MBAs will design a landing page. Developers will do operations. VCs will build a community.

After running a beta of the “Everybody Codes” workshop at HBS in May, we’re moving the second iteration to the thoughtbot office in September, where you’ll see a finely tuned software firm in action.

You’ll get a clear explanation of the web development process and modern technology stack. You’ll understand how disparate terms like test-driven development, version control, and continuous development fit together in coherent whole. You’ll hear different ways of dividing team roles and ways to contribute to a code-based product when you’re not deeply technical.

The itinerary:

  • 12:00-1:00pm: Lunch provided by thoughtbot
  • 1:00-2:00pm: The software process from concept to customer feedback
  • 2:00-2:40pm: The current stack (HTML, CSS, Javascript, Ruby, Rails, jQuery, Postgres, Heroku, AWS)
  • 2:40-3:00pm: Break
  • 3:00-3:20pm: Emerging technologies (MongoDB, Redis, Backbone.js, jQuery Mobile, Node.js)
  • 3:20-3:40pm: What does good software look like? (reliability, security, re-use, etc.)
  • 3:40pm-4:20pm: Team roles, creating more developers in Boston
  • 4:20pm-onward: Laptop setup (optional) and drinks

TO SIGN UP: Visit http://workshops.thoughtbot.com/sections/20 and use the coupon “HBS” to receive a 30% discount. Please note that this session will be small. thoughtbot and TechMedia Club are in talks to hold another session later on in the Fall semester, but details have not yet been finalized.

Will I learn to code in this class?

No, learning to code takes more work than this. However, you’ll learn the landscape of web development in 2011. You’ll understand the whole stack and the skills of people who work at each layer. You’ll understand the costs of hosting providers and cloud services. You’ll learn why Rails became a popular web framework choice for startups and which new tools are making their way into startups’ toolboxes.

Should I bring my laptop?

If you’d like to get Rails installed and your laptop hooked up to Github and Heroku, then yes. We’ve scheduled an optional period at the end of the class where we’ll help you get set up but the main focus is on making sure all students understand the stack and the ecosystem.

Is this the same class as the one in May given to Harvard Business School students?

It’s an adaptation. The class at HBS was “Everybody Codes” 1.0. This is 2.0. We learned in that class that getting 30 Mac and Ubuntu laptops set up in 3 hours is possible, but painful, and not the best use of time. A better use is to go over vocabulary and have a discussion with industry experts about technology, how to make mobile platform choices, which agile techniques to use, and hiring hacks.

2011 Fall Term Field Study Opportunity

Project Description

A rapidly-growing, well-funded online video startup is looking for a field study team to help define its global expansion strategy. DramaFever currently serves over 1 million U.S. users per month and will expand globally into multiple new content genres by year’s end. We are seeking a team of 3-4 students with some prior experience in international marketing, product development, and/or subscription services at large consumer web properties, especially during the formative years. Though the exact specifications of the project won’t be finalized until we meet the team, students should expect to leverage the whole ‘MBA skill set.’ A rough overview follows:

  • Market sizing and positioning in key domestic/international markets
  • Developing a model to prioritize our content acquisition strategy to reflect this research
  • Recommend a strategy to develop and deploy products (free and paid) in key geographies
  • Help structure a marketplace that allows for crowdsourced translation of media

Company Description

Launched in August 2009, DramaFever is a cross-border distribution platform for international TV and movies. We are creating a vibrant, global online community around international TV/movies by making them available on demand with subtitles/dubbing through our network of curated websites, mobile applications, and syndication partners.  We are based in New York City, with offices in Philadelphia and Korea.
