Have we saved the best for last?  Even if you already have summer plans come learn why Forbes has called Spiceworks the “future of media” and Techcrunch dubbed us the “Facebook of IT”.

Spiceworks is a fast-growing, Austin-based [you know you want to be part of the buzz that is Austin...] company that’s blazing the trail in “social business”.  We connect nearly 1.5 million IT pros with over 200 tech companies while they do their jobs.  It’s a powerful combo that takes the best of consumer business models and applies it to a trillion dollar industry.

Backed by $29M in funding from top VCs, Spiceworks is adding to it’s product marketing and management ranks.  If you have a background in media, advertising, technology, or ecommerce, we want to hear from you.

Come hear Jay Hallberg (HBS, 2000), Co-founder and Chief Marketing Officer of Spiceworks, talk about about how he helped make it all happen…and find out how you can get in on the action.

Date: Thursday, April 28th

Time: 3-4pm

Everybody codes at HBS (Coding bootcamp)

April 19, 2011  |  No Comments  |  by deeksha  |  Events

thoughtbot, the HBS Rock Center, and the TechMedia Club invite you to 3 free afternoon workshops the first week of May. Harvard Business School students will learn how to run web applications on their laptops, make code changes, and deploy the app to production.

Why should I learn how to code?

According to startup lore[1], Ev, Biz, Goldman, and others at Odeo all had a running version of Twitter on their laptops while it was initially being created. They were not “developers per se” but could and did make code changes, pushing the code into version control and deploying it to production.

Sometimes by necessity and other times by personality, many great startups have a culture of “I can help with that.” Designers learn server-side code. MBAs learn design. Developers learn operations. The goal is minimize the time between coming up with an idea and having users try it.

What’s the schedule?

Tuesday, May 3, 3pm-5pm – configure laptops to run Rails app in development, get code

Wednesday, May 4, 3pm-5pm – apply universal design principles in HTML, change code

Friday, May 6, 3pm-5pm – commit to version control, push to production, deploy code

Friday, May 6, 5pm – drinks at John Harvard’s on thoughtbot

How can I sign up?

We have space for 30 students. It’s free for HBS students to attend. All 3 days are required. Please sign up here to reserve your spot and pay a refundable reservation payment.

More about thoughtbot

We run three SaaS products of our own for other developers.Weʼve written a large amount of open source code, run usersʼ groups at our office coveringRuby, mobile development, and web design, and care deeply about community.

How much does Netflix spend on postage each year? According to

Will the flu or common cold ever be eradicated like smallpox?
A virologist/immunologist explains exactly why medicine has conquered
one but not the others. Another biologist and an MD join in.

It’d be difficult to find answers of this caliber anywhere else on the
web, as much of the world’s information today remains in peoples’
heads. Quora is a continually improving collection of questions and
answers created by everyone who uses it — a place for people to share
knowledge of all kinds.

At the same time, we’re a startup building technology that makes
engineers and designers amazingly productive at creating a highly
responsive website. Our founders include the first CTO of Facebook,
employees come from top schools including Harvard, MIT, Stanford,
Caltech, and CMU, and many have previously worked at Google, Facebook,
and Twitter. (Meet the team at http://www.quora.com/about/team .)

This Wednesday evening at 6:30, come to Pierce 307 to see a
demonstration of our technology and a technical talk about how it
works. Pizza from Beauty’s will be served.
