Bill Boyce: From the Street to the Board Room

Bill Boyce (MBA 1979), a former street kid, is the founder of Highland Capital, an early investor in the cellular industry and the man behind Affiliated Publications’ remarkable purchase of 45% of McCaw Cellular Communication that resulted in a gain for Affiliated of over $3 billion.  Bill left his career 20 years ago to raise his children and most recently came out of retirement to become the lead director for SkillSoft—the world’s largest e-learning company—and directed a $1.2 billion take-private deal led by Berkshire Partners and Bain Capital.

Bill has been a generous guest speaker for the VCPE community at HBS for the past 14 years.  Rather than a lecture, he would like this event to be interactive, so bring your tough questions—on private equity, the art of doing a deal or getting the job you want—and Bill will answer them with directness, honesty and insight that will be well worth your time.

Rob Go, investor in four HBS companies, will be speaking to students about Entrepreneurship, VC, and investing in HBS founders.

Bio:  Rob is a cofounder of NextView Ventures and has dedicated his career as an investor and operator to internet-enabled innovation. Previously, Rob was a venture capitalist at Spark Capital, a leading venture firm focused on the intersection of media, technology, and entertainment. In this role, he was deeply involved in launching and coordinating Start@Spark, a seed stage investment program targeted at early- stage companies in the New York and Boston areas.

Before joining Spark Capital, Rob held product roles at Ebay, and was the North America Business Unit owner for “Finding”. In this role, he helped to launch over 20 products that significantly enhanced Ebay’s search, browse, and merchandising capabilities.

Pocket Gems visiting HBS!

Pocket Gems, a Sequoia-backed mobile gaming startup in San Francisco, will be visiting HBS on October 29th.  The company is going through a phase of tremendous growth, having gone from 10 to 140 employees since January 2011 (including 4 HBS alums).  We are looking to hire aggressively for our product management, analytics and user acquisition teams.  Eric Lam (HBS ’11) and Salim Dewani (HBS ’12) will be available at the Grille on Tuesday Oct 30th 12:00 to 5:00 pm to meet interested ECs and share their experiences. Crocodile in the Yangtze follows China’s first Internet entrepreneur and former English teacher, Jack Ma, as he battles US giant eBay on the way to building China’s first global Internet company, Alibaba Group.  An independent memoir written, directed and produced by an American who worked in Ma’s comany for eight years, Crocodile in the Yangtze captures the emotional ups and downs of life in a Chinese Internet startup at a time when the Internet brought China face-to-face with the West.  The film was awarded both the Jury Award and Audience Award for “Best Documentary” at the San Francisco United Film Festival.
