Early-Stage Startup Financing: HBS Angels and Other Sources

9/22/2011 – 4:00-5:00PM – Aldrich 109

Learn how to leverage the HBS alumni community to raise money for your startup.  Hear from three CEOs (two alums, 1 student), one VC, and the co-President of the HBS Angels (www.hbsangels.net), a global alumni club for HBS and Harvard alumni angel investors.  Panelists include: Sheila Marcelo ’98 (CEO and founder of Care.com), Fred Shilmover ’10 (CEO and founder of InsightSquared), Sean Dalton ’98 (Managing General Partner at Highland Capital Partners), Danielle Weinblatt ’12 (founder of TakeTheInterview.com), Sean Jacobsohn (co-President of HBS Angels and VP of Worldwide Alliances at YouSendIt).  Moderator is Mike Roberts, Executive Director for the Arthur Rock Center for Entrepreneurship.

1) For angels: How does the deal sourcing and screening process usually work for you?  What can the entrepreneur do during this phase to get noticed and get a “hearing”?

2) For VCs/angels: How does the HBS network play into the process and how can it continue to be useful over time?  How does traditional VC fit into the ecosystem?

3) For student entrepreneurs: What process did you use to find and get in front of angels?  What seemed to work effectively?  How did you use the HBS network?

Business Development MBA Internship, Yipit

April 12, 2011  |  No Comments  |  by daniel  |  Jobs

Yipit is a venture backed NYC startup that aggregates 400 Daily Deals sites and recommends offers based on where you are and what you like. We are building the technology front end to a new multi-billion dollar industry.

We are growing very quickly (nearing 200K subscribers, doubling every three months) and have received praise from The Today ShowThe New York TimesTechCrunchCNN and more.

The Yipit API

The Yipit API allows developers to build their own applications atop of the Yipit platform. We aggregate 15,000 Daily Deal offers per month across the major metros.

The product is brand new, but we already have 100+ of API users building on it. Our goals for the API are: (i) increase total number of developers using the platform and (ii) increase the total number of clicks we drive through the platform.

We would like to work with an MBA student from a top program in a summer role to help define and execute our business development strategy around our API product.

The Position

To understand how we’re thinking about the role, please read Chris Dixon and Shaival Shah‘s framework for the modern business development function. This summer we would like you to:

  • Define our key success metrics for the product (clicks, affiliate revenue, links, etc)
  • Conceive and execute marketing strategies to execute on those metrics
  • Account manage API partner relationships and provide product management input around customer feedback and use cases

Join Us

Please apply by providing your online presence and an outline how you will achieve the above goals this summer:

Some clarifications:

  • Be as detailed as possible
  • You have no constraints, only your ability to execute

Given the nature of this opportunity, we expect it to be extremely competitive. We are looking for someone truly exceptional, and who is ready to make this startup the primary focus of their summer.

This is a paid summer position, but more importantly, a rare and valuable opportunity to run a startup inside a startup – perfect for an operationally minded person who wants to start their own company one day. What’s more, Yipit currently has fewer than ten employees – you will have full awareness to all aspects of what we do.

Apply (and send questions) to [email protected].

Externship, Product Team, HubSpot

April 3, 2011  |  No Comments  |  by daniel  |  Jobs
The Product Team Externship is an opportunity to join a product management team at a growing software startup. Depending on interest and opportunity, the externship might include helping to design an aspect of a feature, doing competitor and/or customer research, or otherwise helping the product team make a decision about the future of the HubSpot product.
Our Product Team has seven designers and product owners. Our engineering team uses a Scrum/Agile software development methodology. Software is released frequently, generally more than once per day. During the externship we will complete at least one full two-week sprint; it’s a busy and exciting time for the product team.
The ideal candidate is one with a moderate technical background and good analytical skills who is looking to enter product management or software management.
HubSpot’s software and advice helps your business grow. It is marketing software to help small and medium businesses get found by prospects, converts them to leads, and analyzes your results. We use a SaaS model. We’ve been enjoying great success, with 200 employees and more than 4,000 customers in just four years.
Obviously, the HubSpot site visit will be a great chance to learn more about us and what you would experience this summer. You can sign up here. You can learn more about HubSpot atwww.hubspot.com or contact Timothy Downs at [email protected] for more information.
