Rain Long

Ms. Long Yu has been the Chief Human Resources Officer & General Counsel in JD Group since August 2012. Before this, she was the Senior Vice President, Global Chief Legal Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer in UTStarcom (UTSI) which is one of the listed companies in NASDAQ America, and owns abundant legal service experience for the United States’ listed companies and professional management ability in multinational company. Later, she was appointed as one of the three top executives for UTStarcom. Before joining UTStarcom, she used to be the Legal Director of the Asia-pacific Region and the main Management Personnel of China, for the listed Swiss company Myriad Group AG.

In addition, she has worked for the domestic listed company East come (East Communication CO., LTD), the CELLON which will go public in United States. She has accumulated rich experience in cross-cultural communication and management.

Ms. Long Yu graduated from Southwest University of Political Science & Law in China, as the major economic law, and she gained the EMBA degree as the “Outstanding Graduates” from CEIBS. Ms. Long Yu got the certificate as Registered Lawyer Qualification of China in 2000.

 

Zhang Yang

Zhang Yang is Vice President for JD Financing Group. Before joining JD, Zhang Yang worked as a senior consultant leading multiple business and information technology transformation programs for industry leaders. Zhang Yang has been working in global locations such as China, Europe and South East Asia countries.

Introduction of JD.com

JD(JD.com) is the largest B2C E-commerce company in China, with a market share of 43.9% in Q2, 2013. Along with 200% growth increase on Gross Merchandise Volume(GMV) in 10 consecutive years, JD grows 3 times faster than the industry average. Now it has over 100 million registered users, and 40 thousand suppliers and 30 thousand sellers. The average daily page views (PVs) are about 200 million, the average daily Unique Visitors (UVs) are about 15 million, and the number of orders per day is about 1 million.

We operated an extensive and highly-efficient distribution network, with 41 warehouses to provide same-day delivery in 25 cities and next-day delivery in another 154 cities across the country. Our technology platform is currently capable of processing at least one million orders per day and recording the status of 6.5 million SKUs.

Andreessen Horowitz, a high technology venture capital firm, has an immediate opening for an investing & research partner focused primarily on startups building products & services for consumers.

Job Description

The Consumer or Enterprise Partner is a member of the firm’s deal & research team. (The firm is hiring for both roles.) The team’s primary goal is to build comprehensive knowledge around the tech ecosystem we can (1) source the most promising companies to consider for investment (2) enable the firm to make the best possible investment decisions and (3) share knowledge and best practices with portfolio companies to accelerate their journey to being world-class technology franchises.

To do this, the Consumer or Enterprise Partner will do the following:

  • Source investment opportunities. The partner will find promising investment opportunities in their domain by developing relationships with entrepreneurs, attending industry events, and cultivating university and corporate networks.
  • Develop a sharp investment point of view on categories and companies.  Why would we invest in a company? What creates the opportunity for an outsize return in a space? What market technology trends are creating disruptions and therefore investing opportunities?
  • Lead comprehensive diligence. The Consumer or Enterprise Partner will lead diligence on investment opportunities. They will provide a comprehensive view of the company’s people, products, technologies, go-to-market plan, competitive position, and anything else relevant to making an investment decision. They will combine their the firm’s collective knowledge with insight from subject matter experts to develop an overall recommendation on whether to invest or not—and what valuation to assign our investment.
  • Understand what the big companies are doing. The Consumer or Enterprise Partner will maintain a set of “pick up the phone” relationships with the key people (across product, business development, marketing and sales) in the most important big companies. The Consumer or Enterprise Partner will meet regularly with these people to understand what the big companies are building and buying, what they are leaving as white space for startups, and how they plan & executive M&A.
  • Attend industry conferences, events, and Webinars. The Consumer or Enterprise Partner will attend relevant industry events to extract and share deal flow and insight with the rest of the firm.
  • Subject matter expert network. The Consumer or Enterprise Partner will continuously grow & nurture the firm’s network of subject matter experts.
  • Present points of view about industry trends and best practices. The Consumer or Enterprise Partner will prepare impactful presentations for a variety of audiences including the firm’s Limited Partners, business development and product managers at companies throughout the tech ecosystems, and press/analysts.

Ideal Candidate Background

The ideal candidate will look like this:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Math, Physics or other technical field. Alternatively, proven analytical capabilities and an intuitive sense evaluating products would be useful skills.
  • 1–5 years experience working in a variety of high tech companies as a product manager, product marketing manager, or business development manager; alternatively equivalent experience working at a consulting firm (e.g., McKinsey, BCG), industry analyst firm (e.g., Gartner, The451, Forrester) or investment bank focused on the technology industry
  • Deep understanding of the startup ecosystem, the history of the technology (especially software) industry
  • Genuine intellectual curiosity, the ability to learn new facts and concepts quickly and comprehensively, then explain those facts & concepts to other people succinctly
  • Proven communications skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to synthesize complex information, form a sharp point of view, and communicate it in a relevant way to different audiences
  • Excellent attention to detail and follow through
  • Ability to juggle multiple items and work on tight deadlines
  • Desire and ability to learn new domains and technologies quickly

The opportunity

We are seeking three HBS students (first or second years) to help create and launch a new technology startup that is aimed at helping companies increase the success rate of product innovations. This startup is part of the incubator at HSG, a leading innovation consultancy with offices in Boston and London. The technology is based on years of research in the field of new product development and has seen success with multiple Fortune 500 companies. This is an unparalleled opportunity to lead the definition, business model and launch of an early stage startup, fully funded and with a proven technology, here in Boston.

Experience and passion

If you have entrepreneurial experience, love building new products and are passionate about being a part of a small team with a big idea, you’d want to check this out. Candidates will be selected based on their creative problem solving abilities, experience in defining and iterating on new business models and execution skill.

Timing & academic credit
