Opportunity to co-write tech articles with General Catalyst

February 15, 2012  |  No Comments  |  by Josh  |  Events

Hi all -

We just heard of a unique opportunity for this semester for people who are entrepreneurial-minded and interested in writing articles on the Boston tech start-up scene.

Bilal Zuberi (Principal at General Catalyst Partners) is looking to work with someone from HBS (or the wider Harvard community) to write a series of 5-6 articles for BostInno, which is like a leading tech blog for the Boston start-up scene. The series of articles will be focused on hot tech startups and will involve meeting, interviewing and networking with tech entrepreneurs, academia and VC’s in Boston.  Bilal will be actively involved in the process to provide necessary mentorship and feedback.  This would be a great opportunity for anyone looking to ‘date’ start-ups in the area and develop a perspective.

This could be taken up as a part-time gig over a few weeks or for academic credit. Bilal will be happy to provide office space and other resources including a stipend if required.

If you are interested, please email Bilal directly with your resume ([email protected]).

VC Summer Internship in Beijing (Qiming)

February 14, 2012  |  No Comments  |  by Josh  |  Events

Job Description:
I am a Managing Director at Qiming Venture Partners in Beijing. I am looking for a full-time MBA intern to work with me on my annual Consumer Internet roadmap for 8 weeks during the summer.

On Qiming Venture Partners:
We are an early stage venture capital firm that focuses on China. We have approximately US$1 billion from 3 funds under management. Our LPs are mostly leading universities and endowments in the US. We have made over 70 investments, all of which are either headquartered in China or treat China as their primary market. We have 4 industry teams spanning internet/consumer services, healthcare, IT, and cleantech, covered by 9 deal-makers and just as many investment professionals. We are affiliated with Ignition Partners in Seattle, and have our own offices in Shanghai, Beijing and Hong Kong. URLs: www.qimingvc.com

Background:
Every summer I work with a couple capable summer associates and analysts to systematically examine new developments in the Consumer Internet space in the US over the last 12 months, as well as to explore potential lessons and adaptations for the Chinese market. Such interns are based in Beijing, China, for roughly 8 weeks from late May/early June to end of July/early August.

Interested students should email their 1 page resume to me at [email protected].
Cover letters are optional and not required.

Nature of this Beijing-based Summer Project:
At a high level, I am intrigued by the convergence of ecommerce, local commerce, online social networks, online gaming, mobile internet (over smartphones) and open platforms. I believe mobile devices will replace notebook PCs in 10 years, photos and videos are more powerful than text for GenY, and open platforms enable massive data analytics and UE to levels unimaginable before. I am also fascinated by sociological factors that help to favor one business model over another in addressing particular user needs, some of which are common across cultures and countries vs. others who are not.

Participating Companies:
This project offers interaction with product managers and executives at Qiming portfolio companies where I am a Board member of:

- in Beijing: Xiaomi  Mobile (小米手机), VANCL (凡客诚品), Leho (爱乐活) which is affiliated with Baidu (百度), and Kaixin001 (开心网), which is affiliated with Tencent (腾讯);
- in Shanghai: 51Fanli (返利网) and eHi Car Rental (一嗨租车)in Shanghai,
- additionally, managers from SINA Microblogs (新浪微博) and another Qiming portfolio Dianping (大众点评网)also participate.

VANCL (凡客诚品) and Xiaomi Mobile (小米手机) are amongst top 5 e-commerce companies in China. Xiaomi is the hottest selling Android phone in China right now. At the risk of over-simplification, Baidu is China’s Google; Tencent is China’s Facebook + EA. eHi Car Rental is China’s Enterprise Car Rental + Boston Coach + Zipcar. Dianping (大众点评网)is China’s Yelp + Foursquare + Groupon. Sina Microblog (新浪微博) is China’s Twitter and more. Kaixin001 (开心网) is amongst China’s leading social game platforms.

Preferred Candidate Background:
Relevant work experience, and/or strong interest (as an active user), in online social networks like Facebook and Twitter, mobile internet (either iPhone or Android phones), FMCG, e-coupons, and/or e-recommendations are required. Fluency in Mandarin Chinese (speaking, reading and/or writing) is a major plus and strongly preferred. Knowledge of (or interest in) either the Japanese or the Korean internet and mobile markets is a plus, but not required. No prior VCPE experience is required. We will work with non-Chinese national on visa entry and work authorization.

Summer@Highland Entrepreneurship Program

January 26, 2012  |  1 Comments  |  by Josh  |  Events

Michael Gaiss, who heads Highland Capital’s Entrepreneurship Program, recently reached out looking for HBS students interested in spending their summer building a start-up. Check out this awesome opportunity below…

Summer@HIGHLAND 2012: $15K + Cambridge/Menlo Park + Awesome Mentors + No Strings Attached

Are you a student entrepreneur looking to take your startup to next level this summer? If so, Summer@HIGHLAND is just what you need.

In its fifth year, Summer@HIGHLAND is an entrepreneurship program designed to provide university-affiliated startups with the environment and resources for taking their initiative/company to the next level. Past participants have included the founding teams of such companies as Wildfire, Gemvara, CloudFlare, Affine, Ksplice, Cogito Health, Imprint Energy and AdPop.

Selected teams will receive $15K and free workspace in our Kendall Square or Sand Hill Road office. They will have access to Highland professionals and an incredible founder network along with thought leaders in business, design, legal, product, talent and technology. Past speakers include founders and CEOs from Airbnb, Dropbox, HubSpot, Quattro Wireless, Starent Networks and SCVNGR. Serial entrepreneurs/founders Steve Blank, Desh Deshpande, Naval Ravikant and Bill Warner have also contributed their expertise, along with business & technology experts from Amazon, Google, IDEO, KAYAK, WilmerHale and others.

Finally, Summer@HIGHLAND is “founder friendly”: Highland receives no equity stake in exchange for a team’s participation, and teams are under no obligation to Highland after the summer. It is also designed to be complementary with other accelerators (for example, teams can participate in both Y Combinator and Summer).

Full details plus the application are at www.hcp.com/summer. BTW, we have two application deadlines this year: Early (March 1, 2012) & Regular (April 5, 2012).

Thanks for your interest in Summer@HIGHLAND. We can’t wait to see what you’re working on!

Yours truly,

The Highland Team
